Songbird An Intimate Biography of Christine McVie by Lesley-Ann Jones Book Review

Songbird is a biography of Christine McVie. She was the keyboard player and background vocals of Fleetwood Mac. She passed away on November 30, 2022. The book shared the story behind the popular song, Dreams. Though Stevie Nicks sings most of the vocals behind that song. It was revealed that at first Christine didn’t care for the songs and thought it was boring. When Stevie played it for her it had three chords and one note all in her left hand. Lindsay came up with an idea to play the three sections out of the identical chords to make it sound differently. This became a huge hit for Fleetwood Mac. It was featured on Rumours which was filled with hits. The book was written from interviews and researched on her life and turned into this book.

I enjoyed learning about her life through interviews and it was interesting in learning more about the famous songwriter and singer. The only thing is I wish it was written from the original band member but she never released one so this is probably the closest thing we will ever have. It was still a good book and there was a lot that I didn’t know about Fleetwood Mac since they were popular years ago and I have only really heard some of their songs.

Alone in Plain Sight Expanded Edition: Searching for Connection When You're Seen but Not Known by Ben Higgins Book Review

In Alone in Plain Sight, Ben Higgins wrote a brand-new book about dealing with the feelings of rejection and how we can reconnect with yourself, others, romantically, and God. Ben Higgins was on the 11th season of the Bachelorette and he also starred on the 20th season of the Bachelor. He begins the book by sharing a personal story about how he has always felt like an outsider and how he was the kid who was a loner and didn’t feel like he fit in. He shared how in reading class, he was the last one picked and he didn’t have a reading partner so he had to partner up with the librarian. He admitted to feeling like an outsider and he always felt rejected by his peers. He felt like he could easier talk to adults than his peers. He was an only child and it wasn’t by choice. His parents spent four years with infertility specialists before they were able to conceive him. He shared how during the pregnancy, she suffered a severe placenta previa hemorrhage and he became a high-risk pregnancy. During this time, his father was also diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Luckily, everything turned out fine and his parents were okay but it changed them afterwards. But after all these events they were unable to have any more children. He explained how these events caused his parents to live life a different way and they raised Ben that every day is gift from God and making meaningful connections with family and friends is extremely important. Ben revealed how he struggled with friendships and he didn’t understand the term casual acquaintance. He wanted to believe that people would be his friend and they would accept him. He explained how he felt like an outsider and that he wasn’t seen, understood, or even valued by his peers and he felt alone in plain sight. He also explored the story of the woman at the well and how judged she was and how Jesus spoke to her as a fellow human being and treated her with respect when the world and her peers rejected her.

Later on, in the book, he opened up about how he was chosen for The Bachelorette with 24 other guys in hopes that he would fall in love with this one special girl. In the book, he shared his experiences and some of his feelings about what he learned about himself while on this journey. He opened up about ending his first engagement and he was struggling and looking for another person to fill up his soul. He eventually realized that hold would never be filled with looking to another person to make us happy and whole. He explained how another person can’t fix our own brokenness inside us. We have to look to our Savior and reconnect with God.

In the book, he also discussed how he started his own company, Generous Coffee and he was able to create jobs globally. This company isn’t just about coffee they also stand for serving others and doing good for others. He explained in the book how the company and vision for the company was formed and how they crafted the ambassador program.

I would this awesome book to anyone is feeling alone and rejected. You might be feeling like you are alone in plain sight and no one sees you or loves you. I immensely loved how real Ben was in this book and it’s not something you would expect from a reality TV star. I’m going to be honest I don’t like the Bachelor or the Bachelorette and I truly hate the show. I don’t really care for it since I personally think most of it is fake and played up for TV. I liked how Ben didn’t really focus on the show as much as he could have. He had a bigger vision and he wanted to help others who are feeling alone and forgotten by their peers and they are dealing with the pains of rejection. I connected with story because I’m also an only child and I personally have felt the pains of rejection. I always have felt like I didn’t fit in. It was a great encouragement to see that I’m not alone and even when I feel like I’m alone in plain sight, I’m not.

Comments regarding the updated edition:

He was finishing the final edits from the book when Covid-19 hit. This led us to become isolated and separated and alone from each other. He explained how important it is to have real connections. He discussed the scriptures which state not to let the left know what they right hand is doing. We need to check our motives for giving to others and generosity. He shared how he found love with Jessica Clarke and he took three years to pop the question. He realized that she couldn’t be the source of his joy and she couldn’t fill a void. He approached marriage with generosity and throwing away the scoreboard and focusing on doing life together. He is also a new dad and has learned the love of a parent to a child. This extra chapter keeps fans updated on his life and journey.

Uncomfortable Either Way: Why Choosing Easy Is Making Your Life Hard by Brett Eaton Book Review

In Uncomfortable Either Way, Brett Eaton explained the importance of choosing to be uncomfortable and the hidden power of doing so. He begins the book by stating that in his 15 years of studying high performers they don’t obtain or grow or discover their strengths when life is easy and it’s going great. He was born in Bergen, New Jersey. He had an older sister who was smart and he found his identify in sports. He played in basketball, football, and baseball. In his sophomore year, he developed back pain and the doctors couldn’t figure out what to do. They instructed on his taking the year off and not working out or doing sports. This led to him becoming out of shape and he became the weakest in his sport. He chose to do something about it and he began to work out again and got a job in construction something to force him into developing the muscles back. Another lesson he learned was when the unimaginable happened. He was at a friend’s house when he got summoned to the hospital. His father has a heart attack at age 52 and died. This taught him how to play on the offense and to get up and get moving and make the impact that we know deep down we can. Another lesson was they we all will die and none of us know when or how it will happen. This leads us to live in the someday when we need to live in the now. The book touched on 21 strategies to reach your higher performance potential.

This book is an excellent read in realizing the power of being uncomfortable and how to look at it in a fresh perceptive. It was interesting in reading how choosing the easy way out is hurting us and help us to minimize regret. I liked how he discussed practical ways in accomplishing goals that we personally want to achieve. He is a very motivated speaker and teacher and this book will encourage readers to transform their lives. I would recommend this inspiring book to anyone who is tired of being struck in rut and they are ready to become uncomfortable and grow into the person they were intended to be.

The True Gifts of Christmas: 25 Traditions to Cherish by Megan Alexander Book Review

In True Gifts of Christmas, Megan Alexander has written a book covering what the true meaning of Christmas is and the traditions we all remember. She has actively been a part of Insider Edition and Thursday Night Football. She begins the book by sharing how she recalls being a little girl and watching the Nutcracker and staring as angel Gabriel in a Christmas play. She was the one who got to tell Mary what was to become of her and baby Jesus. She has always loved Christmas and even used the Nutcracker song as she walked down the aisle of her wedding. In this book, she helps readers to see the spiritual side of Christmas. She enclosed some crafts and recipes throughout the book. Some of the recipes included gingerbread cookies, cinnamon rolls, and much more.

One of the days she touched on the topic of candy canes and what they mean. The stripes are like the red blood that was shed for our sins on the cross. White stands for our Savior who is pure. The J shape is for Jesus is my Lord. You always notice how the candy cane is like a staff for a shepherd. She shared how her family has a family tradition of hunting candy canes in the backyard every year with the neighbor kids. This is sort of like an easter egg hunt. They give out a prize to whoever collects the most. They then read the history of the candy cane and how it represents Jesus.

I liked how she discussed the story of Santa and how he has Christian roots, the meaning behind candles, why fruit is gifted at Christmas, the Christmas carol, the truth behind the song: Silent night, and new ideas for new traditions. This is an excellent book to get you in the Christmas spirit and will help you to get closer as a family. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a new Christmas book covering new traditions and ideas and it had a spiritual meaning presented.
