In Awaking Wonder, Sally Clarkson explored the topic of parenting and how her and her husband, Clay decided to lead their four children. This book is 36 years in the making and in it she looked at how she chose to influence and teach their children key principles. Her family strongly believes in living a wonder filled life and they encouraged them to imagine, dream, create, and grow. She explained how we need to let our children imagine and not to be consumed with technology. She shared how they chose to live by four basic goals in their home: “love of learning, unconditional love and acceptance, authentic faith and ingrained virtue, and purposeful life” and how they wanted their children to grow into God loving adults. In the book, she looked at how she instilled faith principles in their daily lives such as nurturing, service, and the teaching of Jesus.
In the book, she described the rhythms and routines that they had in their families. These included morning devotionals, reading aloud time, play and pretend, afternoon reading and quiet hour, tea time, five o’clock clean up, dinnertime to discuss some of the questions about morning reading time, and then nighttime reading time. Some of the morning reading time included subjects on literature, science, nature, cultural, history, bibliography, theology, fiction, and non-fiction. She liked to read for an hour and a half most mornings to help her children learn vocabulary and about a vast of information on different subjects. She also shared how the only textbooks they used was math and language arts. As a result, of creating an atmosphere of reading all four of their kids love to read and the whole family has written a few books. She also shared their education and career paths each of her children chose and how some even had PhD’s.
I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is looking for a new approach to parenting and we’re wanting to nurture and open up the wonder and encourage an atmosphere of learning. I immensely enjoyed the principles she shared in how she had morning reading times and nighttime reading. She covered a wide range of topics with her children. I thought this was a great way to encourage reading in our children and to create an atmosphere of learning. I also liked how she suggested we watch out for too much technology. All of her children are grown and they didn’t have the iphones and ipads that this generation is growing up with but we can see that it’s changing our future generations. I liked how she enclosed how she was able to instill faith and character and virtues into her children lives.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Bethany House/ Chosen for my honest review.”
