Captive: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero by Ashley Smith with Stacy Mattingly Book Review

In Captive, Ashley Smith opens up about how she survived being held hostage. Ashley had just moved into her new apartment in Atlanta. She was busy unpacking boxes and didn’t stop until 2 a.m. She was trying to finish unpacking before she left the next day to go see her daughter, Paige. She realized that she needed more cigarettes so she decided to go to the local gas station. As she was leaving, she noticed a dark blue truck parking and thought nothing more of it. She made it to the store and when she returned she realized that the truck was now parked behind where she was originally parked. She exited her car and tried quickly to make it back to her apartment. The guy grabbed her and she dropped her purse. He forced her back to her apartment and she begged for him to not harm her life for the sake of her daughter. Luckily, Paige was staying with her aunt who had custody of her.

A couple hours earlier, Brian Nichols shot and killed a judge, a court reporter, a deputy, and a federal agent before escaping in a vehicle. This same person was now holding Ashley Smith hostage. He eventually tied her up and she was afraid that he would kill her. She tried sharing parts of her story where she could try and related to him. In the book, she reveals what they discussed and readers will get to see some of Nichols past. She also shared her past, how she lost her husband, how she became addicted to drugs, and how God changed her life.

I would recommend this remarkable book to anyone who enjoys reading a dramatic story about survival and how God used her. I remember the day Brian Nichols shot a number of people and escaped and was on the loose. It hit close to home because I live north of Atlanta and I recall the late breaking news on all local networks and some national stations. I love reading about Ashley Smith’s survival story. Her personal story was very inspirational and seeing how she finally beat her addictions to drugs will encourage readers that with God’s help all things are possible! I also liked how The Purpose Driven Life played a part in her survival and how it helped influence Brian into surrendering. I can’t wait to see the movie that is coming out to theaters soon!

Israel’s Mission: Becoming a Kingdom of Priests in a Prodigal World by Ray Vander Laan Film Review and Book Review

In Israel’s Mission, Ray Vander Laan explored the history of Israel and our mission to lead the lost sheep and prodigals back to the Lord. The film and book contains five lessons including: Abraham and Sarah and the Three Stanger’s, Israel at Sinai: The First Great Commission, Jesus Renews the Mission: Seeking the Lost, The Lost Son: In a Far Country, and The Seeking Father: The Lost Son Returns. The Bible study also encompasses five days of personal devotional studies to help readers to dig deeper into the message.

I would recommend this awesome Bible study to anyone who enjoys learning about Israel and the message Jesus has for His people. This series would make a great Bible study for your next small group study. Ray Vander Laan did an excellent job at filming and conveying the teachings found only in Israel’s land. I loved how he filmed and showed Israel and it helped me to imagine what it looked like since I haven’t ever personally seen the Holy Land. I loved the topics of reaching out to the lost sheep and the power that is found when Jesus touches their hearts and lives and they are transformed. I also loved that the book shared tons of scriptures and had a great number of questions where readers could ponder and discuss with a small group. If you’re looking for an exciting new Bible study, then read and watch this one!

The Biggest Story: How the Snake Crusher Brings Us Back to the Garden by Kevin Deyoung and Illustrated by Don Clark Book Review

The Biggest Story is an illustrated book written by Kevin Deyoung. This book walks children through the small stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Daniel, Jesus birth, and Jesus resurrection. The book also explained how all of the stories related to the biggest story and that is Jesus fulfilling the prophecies of the scriptures.

I would recommend this amazing book to every single child. The book shows the true story of Biblical stories and it’s written in a way that children can understand the meaning of the stories. I liked how Kevin Deyoung connected the Old Testament to the New Testament and he showed how Jesus was the answer to the prophecies in the Old Testament. I loved how the book contained such powerful illustrations. The illustrations are very bright and abstract looking and it will engage children and lure them into comprehending the message. Readers can tell the drawings must have taken a while to complete and the drawings were printed very clear. I also like how the cover and the back page had the 3D texture to make it more kids friendly. If you’re looking for a kid’s friendly book with a Christian message, then read this book!
