The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet, 3rd Edition: A Healthy Eating Program to Improve Your Type 2 Diabetes by Donald D. Hensrud, M.D. Book Review

In The Mayo Clinic Diabetes, Donald D. Hensrud has written a comprehensive to guide readers on how to eat healthier and to exercise more. He explained the most important thing to do to prevent our risk of developing diabetes is to lose weight. If we would lose the weight, we could reverse the process and our blood sugar glucose levels could improve. This book is meant to be a lifestyle change. The book covered the lose it phase and we could potentially lose 6 to 10 pounds in two weeks. You will first need to look at your habits which five to add, break and adopt. The book also discussed how life changing it is when you eat a healthy breakfast and has been linked to better performance in school/work. The next phase is live it and this one discussed how to continue the journey. It will help you set new goals. The book contained helpful hints on eating out, portion size, serving size, activity plan, and what to do when you mess up on your plan. It enclosed new recipe ideas. He revealed how people tend to underestimate how many calories they consume and this is key. Another critical lesson is working up to exercising for 300 minutes a week for five days a week to lose weight.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is at risk for getting diabetes and that is pretty much everyone! I have recently been warned to watch my sugar and I could get prediabetes. It definitely runs in my family. It was surprising to read about the effects that my body could already be experiencing and it could damage my heart or blood vessels. This book contained tons of information on eating healthier and controlling your blood sugar. Some of my favorite recipes included, California avocado wrap, buffalo zucchini sticks, pita pizza, just to name a few. I liked how it contain chef comments. It was also really helping in how he explained and compared the serving sizes to real life objects where readers can easily measure it out. It also had a helpful chapter that was written like a Q and A. This book will assist you in changing your entire lifestyle to become a healthier you.

Medical Judgment by Richard L. Mabry, M.D. Book Review

My Review:

Medical Judgement is a novel about Dr. Sarah Gordon who has recently lost her husband and daughter in a terrible car accident. The book starts out with a scary house fire scene that someone intentionally set. She discovers that someone is stalking her and watching her every single movement. She tries to get help from her husband’s best friend and she also reaches out to a detective for help in trying to figure out who is stalking her. Every character has a story and a past that will be revealed throughout the book! This book’s plot will lure you in!

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who enjoy a thriller. I have read a couple of books by Richard L. Mabry and I can tell that he is only improving in his writing. I loved how I kept having to change my opinion of who was behind the crazy things occurring in this book. I loved how the book discussed the topics of losing someone you love, finding healing, finding love again, moving from the past, and rediscovering your faith. I loved how Mabry shared how Sarah struggled with her faith and how God was always present in the challenges and storms. I also liked how the book explored the different dynamitic of the characters and we get to see many different aspects of their lives. I believe this helped keep the plot interesting and it kept the suspense going. This book would make a wonderful summer read and would be great for a beach trip!

In Miracle Drug, Dr. Ben Lambert tragically died from an apparent heart attack. His body turns up missing and is later recovered cremated before they could perform an autopsy on him. Dr. Lambert is the personal physician to the former President of the United States, David Madison. Before he died, Lambert recommend Dr. Josh Pearson if something was to happen to him. Dr. Josh Pearson becomes former President Madison new physician. Josh’s girlfriend, Rachel went to South America for a special trip along with the Madison and a small group of people. Rachel and Madison develop a cough and had a raw throat. Dr. Pearson believed they both have diphtheria and they were supposedly given immune shots before their trip. They are in both need of a miracle drug to heal their bodies. Meanwhile someone is trying to kill the former president. Will they succeed? Will they have enough antidote for the both of them? Will Dr. Pearson have to make a difficult choice on who gets it? Who killed Dr. Lambert? Many questions will be answered in this book!

I would recommend this amazing book to anyone who enjoys medical mystery novels and they love a good adventure. I liked how Dr. Richard L. Mabry, M.D. explains the medical terminology in way a non-medical background can understand what occurs. I also loved how he described the steps and process it takes for the FDC to approve new drugs. I have read a few books by Dr. Mabry and let me tell you, his stories keep getting better and better. His new book is very fast paced and it will grab the reader’s attention until the case is solved. I liked how Dr. Mabry was able to keep me guessing on who was behind the crime and who was attempting to assassinate the former president. I also liked how the book enclosed discussion questions to assist readers into digging deeper into the meaning of the story. I also liked how they included the first chapter of his next book, “Medical Judgement”. I can’t wait to read his next book! If you’re seeking a new mystery book, then read this one!

About the book:

Miracle Drug
(Abingdon, September 2015)

Overcoming these odds will take more than a miracle drug---it will take a miracle.

The infection wasn't supposed to happen, but it did. The treatment was supposed to take care of it, but it didn't. Then Dr. Josh Pearson discovers why---his patients, including the former President of the United States, have been dosed with a different strain of the original virus, one that is universally fatal. The only chance for survival is treatment with an experimental drug, but the manufacturer might already have discarded its supply.

As if treating the President of the United States isn't stressful enough, the situation goes from bad to worse when Rachel Moore, a nurse Josh is falling in love with, falls ill. With the nation's eyes on him, Josh must pull off a miracle to save a man who holds a good deal of power and the woman who holds his heart.

Good Mood Bad Mood: Help and Hope for Depression and Bipolar Disorder By Charles D. Hodges, M.D. Book Review

Depression is often easily diagnosed to many people because there are no lab tests to determine if someone is actually suffering from depression. Good Mood Bad Mood is written to cause readers to deem if doctors are just declaring and labeling patients as depressed and not considering that some might be going through a sad event. Charles D. Hodges included the list from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders on how doctors diagnose patients with depression. To summarize the list, the major points were if you have a depressed mood every day, lost of pleasure in activities, weight gain or loss, fatigue, feeling worthless, unable to concentrate, thoughts of suicide, unable to sleep or sleeping too much. (The whole list is on page 25). A study by the NIMH found that, “Over 25 percent of the U.S. population will carry the label of depression, anxiety, or bipolar at any given time (Page 20).

An important point of the book that Charles D. Hodges used was mixing in scriptures to covey how God views sadness and the hope that is found in God alone. He pointed out that a woman in Luke 8 with a hemorrhage for twelve years couldn’t find a doctor to help her. The lady finally touched Jesus cloak and was healed. He shared this to position to point out that many people are turning to doctors for help with depression and many are still struggling with depression or sadness. There is nothing wrong with seeking help with doctors we should when we need help. But we also have to keep in mind that some doctors are overprescribing medicine to fix depression and some depression might just be temporary sadness. Charles D. Hodges stated that you should always consult your doctor for you personally.

Charles D. Hodges explained the big difference between normal sadness and depression. Normal sadness basically means an event happened that caused us to feel sad. For example, an illness, loss of a love loved, lost our job, or a failed marriage. The sadness occurred and depending on how big the incident it will take time to process. A death of a child, parent, or spouse can cause grief to last for a lifetime. You don’t get over someone you loved. Some sadness is only temporary like the lost of a job or a relationship break up. Once you find a new job/person the sadness will soon be forgotten.  It is estimated that, “90 percent of those diagnosed with depression are simply sad because of a significant loss, it may also be true that they are nearly 90 percent of patients for whom current medication is no more effective than a placebo” (Page 69).

I would recommend this astonishing book to anyone who has been diagnosed with depression or they are feeling a great deal of sadness from a terrible occasion. I am glad that someone is finally questioning the amount of people that are being diagnosed with depression. I loved the fact that Charles D. Hodges has written this book for the 90% that might be sad over an event and is needing time to recover. It’s was also helpful that he instructed readers to trust in God and not worry about things they can’t change. Being anxious doesn’t assist us in being at peace. I loved the aspect that he included a bunch of scriptures to help people who are sad to listen to God’s written word and to remember that God will turn our sadness into joy. This book has the potential to change your thinking about depression and sadness and it will offer readers huge encouragement that could vastly enhance your life!
