Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Nine: Sit Down to Stand By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 9:

Theme: Sit Down to Stand

In Ephesians 6:10-17, Paul stated that believers are supposed to be strong in the Lord and this is where our strength and help comes from. Depending on our own ability is foolish thinking and it will only lead to failure. We’re told to put in the full armor of God where we can stand against the devil schemes and tactics. Christians are reminded that we aren’t fighting against flesh and blood but against the evil rulers and spirits of the hidden dark world.

It’s crucial for believers to put on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. Our shoes, we must put on the peace following from the goodness of God. The shield of faith is used to protect us from the arrows of the enemy. Next, we are instructed to put on the helmet of salvation. The sword of the Spirit is the written word of God. We are commanded to pray in the Spirit constantly and to be persistent in our prayers.

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Eight: Walk Worthy in Relationships By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 8:

Theme: Walk Worthy in Relationships

In Ephesians 5:21, we read about the significance of submitting to one another out of admiration of Christ. Wives are advised to submit to their husbands as unto the Lord. Christ has declared that husbands are the head of their wife like Christ is the head of the Church. There are definability limits in submission such as, wives shouldn’t be doormats and this also doesn’t allow men to abuse women. Wives are encouraged to respect their husbands and listen to his leadership.

Husbands are called to love their wife as Christ loved the Church. He sacrificed His life for us and washed us clean from our many sins. The man that loves his wife portrays love for himself. We aren’t permitted to hate our own bodies and this means we are supposed to care for our wives.

Paul explained to believers that we are commanded to leave our fathers and mothers and be united with our spouse. Two flesh are to become one like Christ and the Church is one.

In Ephesians 6:1-4, we get a teaching on children and parenting. Children are commanded to obey and honor their parents because they belong to the Lord. This is also the first commandment with a promise. God promised that if you honor your parents, you will have a long life on earth. Fathers are instructed to not angry their children in how we treat them. Fathers are called to use discipline and instruction from the written Word.

As an employee, we are directed to mind people in authority with respect and we’re taught to serve them as we would Christ. We are ordered to hard work even when they aren’t watching us. Bosses are instructed to treat their employees in the same way and they aren’t permitted to threaten them. Paul reminded us that God has no favorites and we are all His children.

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Seven: Walking “Under the Influence” By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 7:

Theme: Walking “Under the Influence”

This week’s lesson looked into Ephesians 5:1-20 and the crucial need of imitating Christ and living by His example. We’re called to live a life intimating the love that Christ has portrayed for the whole world by His ultimate sacrifice on the cross. When I was a child, I would imitate my dad and papa and I desired to follow in their footsteps. I would always be right behind them assisting them when they were building onto my parents’ home. They showed me how to work hard and how to love your family like Christ loved the church. Like little children looking up to our role models, we should do the same and work towards imitating Christ.

In verse three, Paul stated to believers the dangers of sexual immorality and greed. These two areas have no place in the Kingdom of God and we’re called to live to a higher level. Sexual desires is a wonderful thing that God has given to us and it was invented to be a gift for married couples. Sexual immortality has increased because of the pornography industry becoming more widely acceptable and accessible. Do we even realize the dangers we have created? Greed has also became more common because we are taught by society to want more and more and we are constantly being marketed to.

In Ephesians 5:8-13, Paul reminded readers we were once in the darkness and now we are in the light once we have accepted Jesus as our Savior. We are commanded to live in the light and live in goodness. We are called to expose the darkness and what people do in secret will also be revealed when the light shines on the truth.

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Six: Talk Your Walk By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 6:

Theme: Talk Your Walk!

In this week’s Bible study, we learn the importance of taming and controlling our tongue. Ephesians 4:17 -24 begins by urging believers to stop living like the Gentiles used to. Their minds used to contain dark thoughts, their hearts were coldhearted towards God, and they lived freely in their lustful thoughts. Paul declared that we must renew our minds and attitudes like Christ. We have to throw off our old sinful ways and be transformed into righteous like Christ.

In Ephesians 4:25, Paul advised believers to stop telling lies about one another and we’re supposed to speak the truth in love. A runaway tongue that isn’t tamed by the living Word of God can do a lot of destruction to our homes, churches, friendships, and our work place. How many marriages have been destroyed alone with the words we choose to speak? How many children that have been bullied, have committed suicide because of negative words spoken? How many people have left the church because of harmful words spoken about them? Being truthful and speaking encouraging words in love is critical!

Anger is another key aspect in Ephesians 26 and we’re told not to sin when we are angry. Paul stated that we shouldn’t let the sun go down on our anger. Most people when they are angry tend to not regulate their emotions and words, and they let destructive words come out, before they even realize it, and they harm their love ones. How many times have we lost our cold and it cost us? But choosing our words wisely, we can influence and change people’s lives.

I have personally have struggled with low self-esteem due to negative words spoken against me. I understand the power that words can hold you back and for years. Unwholesome talk would be: “You’re not smart, pretty, handsome, and not skinny enough, you’re a mistake, you’re an idiot, you should have never been born, you’re a failure.” Helpful talk would be: “You did a great job, I’m proud of you, and you’re really good at ___.” The power of using positive words, encouraging words could immensely change someone’s life! Speaking life enhancing into someone’s life would radically boost and build their self-esteem and help undo some of the poisonous words spoken to them. We would also becoming more like Christ.

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Five: Sit Down to Walk By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 5:

Theme: Sit Down to Walk

Lesson 5 covered material found in Ephesians 4:1-16. Paul writes to believers in Ephesus and tells them that a Christian walk should be comprised of being humble, gentle, patience, and forgiving others for their mistakes and loving them. I struggle with forgiving others quickly when they hurt me. Sometimes it takes much more time than it really should. I tend to hold on to anger and get offended when I need to turn it over to God and let him handle it.

Next, Paul reminded believers that Christ has given every single believer an extraordinary gift because of his bigheartedness and kindness. In 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 and Romans 12:6-8, we see a list of spiritual gifts that is given to us in order to help others. They are special knowledge, great Faith, gift of healing, power to perform miracles, prophesy, discernment about different spirits, speaking in tongues, interpretation of speaking in tongues, serving others, encouragement, giving, leadership, and kindness. We all have different spiritual gifts and our responsibility is to use our gifts to build up the church. We are also one body in Christ and we’re called to unity.

Some of my spiritual gifts that God has blessed me with is wisdom and giving Godly advice and discernment in what people are saying and the truth. This is the reason why I’m majoring in Psychology and I want to be equipped to help children and adults, who struggle with low self-esteem, eating disorders, love and relationship issues, red flags in dating, how to end bullying, preventing suicide, parenting children, marriage problems, overcoming addictions, grief, handling stress in the workplace, how to monitor technology usage with children, how to protect our children from predators, how to help foster children to deal with the trauma experiences of losing or being abandoned by their birth parents, and people who were abused. My goal right now is to become a counselor and to assist people with their concerns.

In Ephesians 4:14, Paul stated that mature Christians aren’t tricked with lies that sound like the truth. A key characteristic of a mature believer is speaking the truth in love. This way we will be more like Christ. When each part of the body uses their special gifts, the Kingdom of God is functioning the way God intended it to.

What are some of your spiritual gifts?

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Four: Sit Down Together By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 4:

Theme: Sit Down Together

In Lesson 4, we read and studied Ephesians 2:11-22. Paul reminded the Gentiles that they used to be referred to as, “uncircumcised heathen” by the Jews. The Jews was circumcised and they overlooked the fact that being circumcised affect only their bodies. Their hearts remained the same. He told the Gentiles that they used to not know the covenant promise God had given to the Jews. The Gentiles were lost and they have no hope. Christ came where Gentile and Jew could be united as one body of Christ. The hostility felt between the groups were supposed to be broken and destroyed. The sacrifice on the cross ended the separation between the two groups. Jesus finished the system of the law with the commandments and all the rules.

It is important to have unity in Christ because failure to do so prevents believers from establishing the family, Christ has envisioned for His people. Everyone longs for a loving connection and a safe haven where they feel included and accepted by people that truly love them. But being united peacefully in a family or a church is exceedingly difficult and it rarely happens. Some of the barriers in families and churches is different doctrines, values, principles, and an immeasurable of other minor things. I have personally seen churches divided over issues in the grand schemes of things doesn’t matter. For example, the type of clothing church members are required to wear in some churches. We need to focus more on the message of Christ and His teachings! Imagine what would happen if harmony was a key standard in every single church and we represented the body of Christ.

In Ephesians 2:19-22, we learnt the Gentiles aren’t strangers and outsiders anymore and they are now included in God’s forever family along with the Jews. Paul stated that Gentiles and Jews together are like a house built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. The cornerstone is Jesus and we are a holy temple for the Lord. These verses displayed the truth that we are no longer alienated by what group, race, and culture we belong to. Christ died on the cross for everyone sins, and it doesn’t matter what your background is. If we let go of our prejudice and stereotypes, unity in the body of Christ could come to pass and the light would be shown in every dark place.

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Three: Sit Down to Work By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson 3:

Theme: Sit Down to Work

This week's lesson covered content found in Ephesians 2:1-10. If you are a believer, before you accepted Jesus Christ into your life and received His forgiveness for your countless sins, you were dead in your sins. The world and unbelievers still finds great pleasure in obeying the leading and the teachings of satan. At one time, every believer has lived for their own personal happiness and we let our sinful desires run rampant. God hates sin and because of His holiness our sin has separated us from Him. He still choose to provide a sacrifice for the world and He sent his only Son, Jesus to die for our sins. In Ephesians 2:5, we realize that He gave us life when He raised Jesus for the grave. He also gave us grace and mercy for our many sins. We are now seated in Heavenly realms next to Christ because of this act of extreme love and grace. This allowed God to display this love for all generations so everyone can witness grace.

My life looks different now from before I was a believer. When I was an early teenager, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. (I'm going to save my whole salvation story until November 21 because that's the day I was actually saved years ago and it's also the day that this Bible study is ending) I remember when I was lost and the fear arose in my heart and a felt a tugging. I wondered what would happened if I died that day. "Would I go to Heaven or Hell?" I realized that I was and still am a sinner in need of a grace and a Savior.

In this study, Sue Edwards encouraged readers to read Galatians 5:13-26. Reading through these passages they were very eye opening and convincing. Especially these verses, "When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21 NLT) Looking through this list, I have struggled with envy, jealousy, hostility, had quarrels, outbursts of anger, lusted, selfish ambition, dissension, and idolatry (putting something or someone before God). And that is just to name a few of my sins. But thank and praise God that He forgives and gives us unmerited grace!

Another critical key note, Sue Edwards reminded readers to watch out for was our sinful nature and its evil desires. In Galatians 5:16-19, we read that there are two forces at work in our lives, and they are always at a spiritual war with each other. The two forces are the Holy Spirit and our sinful nature. The Holy Spirit lives inside of you when you accept Jesus as your Savior and we have fruit. "But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!" (Galatians 5:19-23 NLT) This is why it's important to display the fruit of the Holy Spirit and let our lives demonstrate evidence that we truly believe in a loving Creator!

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson Two: Sit and Pray By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson Two:

Theme: Sit and Pray

This lesson is covering material primarily on Ephesians 1:15-23. The Ephesians were known for their sturdy grounded faith in our tender Savior and the love they demonstrated to others. Paul persistently thanked God for them and their full devotion to Christ. He prayed daily for them and asked God to give them divine wisdom. He also prayed that they would always develop in the knowledge of God and his ways. Next, Paul prayed that their hearts would be filled to overflow with incredible light where believers can comprehend the confident hope and that we would know our magnificent inheritance found in Christ.

Living with an attitude of prayer is key strategy in connecting to the heart of God. It’s critical to be prayerful throughout the entire day. Whatever trials or difficult situations that we may be going through, prayer assists us in handling our problems, and we will be more at peace. We can also bring our repentance, petitions, concerns, and our hurts to the merciful Creator. But most essentially, we can bring our praise and thankfulness and worship our Savior.

In Ephesians 1:19-23, Paul revealed that he prayed for believers to grasp the infinite power of God. He explained to Christians that the same mighty power that raised Christ from the grave is inside us. When Christ rose, he conquered death and displayed resurrection power! Christ is seated next to God in the heavenly realms. Christ has the definitive authority over every single ruler, leader, and everything else. He has power in this world and the world to come. Christ is the head of the church, and the church is His body, and he has control of all things. Resurrection power means that Christ has overcame everything including our sins and death. The devil will one day, very soon, be thrown into the lake of fire. Victory will be Christ, and pain and heartache will be gone! Resurrection power is something that I must remind myself when I go through trying seasons and I feel pressed to the limit.

Reading through the Bible study, I have noticed that I tend to pray whenever I need help and life is getting out of control. I sometimes forget that God wants to be a close friend and Father and communication is imperative. One thing that I realized that would immensely benefit me would be the prayer log included in the study and following through and actually making notes of how my prayer life is going. What would really help me, would be to pause and reflect and pray before I take on my different College subjects and tests, practice guitar, and when I rise and when I lay down to rest.

When Paul prays in Ephesians 3:14, he takes the time to kneel before God in honest humility. When you kneel, before God, you feel more at peace and contentment. This is a model, that I should follow and I could use some major improvement in.

I intensely hope that you will be joining us in this wonderful study of Ephesians by Sue Edwards! Together, we can learn more about Christ and God’s written Word. And also please check back each Friday on my blog through November 18 for more insights into the amazing study!

Ephesians Bible Study Lesson One: Learning to Sit with Christ By Sue Edwards

Ephesians Lesson One:

Theme: Learning to Sit with Christ

The Book of Ephesians was written by Paul while he was in prison in Rome. He wrote this letter to the church of Ephesus, the capital of Asia. The city was famously known for black magic and had a strong demonic stronghold presence in the city. The seven-breasted fertility goddess, Artemis was in charge of spreading sexuality, homosexuality, prostitution, and cults in order to ensnare the people. Paul was committed to reaching out the believers in the city and reminding them to stand firm on the power of Christ. He encouraged them to find their true identity in Christ and he reminded them that they had power over the enemy.

In Ephesians 1:4-5, these verses specified that God chose us and adopted us into His family. He made this decision ahead of time before He even created the world into existence. He also loved us first and it gave Him great joy and happiness to include us into His family. We are also without shame and guilty from our countless sins, that we commit before His eyes. He is able to forgive us because of the blood of Jesus covering us and making us holy in His sight. If believers could grasp what this concept of adoption means, our lives would be radically changed. Picture for a moment that you have no Earthly parents, and you don’t know who they even are. You feel alone, forgotten, heartbroken, lonely, and you wonder why you don’t have a parent to love you. You have never had a day celebrating your birthday and you have been through many failed foster homes. I hope you realize that this heartbreaking reality is in fact, happening in the world around us right now. This is why I applauded anyone who has adopted and included children into your families. Adoption is one thing, I tremendously hope, I get to do a little bit later in my life. Spiritual adoption is something that God has chosen to in advance for His children and as believers we are blessed in the Heavenly realms.

Sue Edwards also suggested to readers in one question to look at Galatians 3:26-29. This passages reminded readers that we are all children of our loving Creator and we are a family in Christ. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are no longer our own. We are bought with a price and we are no longer defined by if we are a Jew, a Gentile, a male, a female, or what color we are. We are a heir and we are children of Abraham and God’s promise to Abraham is for us too! If you recall, God promised Abraham that he would be a father of great nations and that every seed of his would be blessed. In Christ, as a heir, we get to freely claim this promise! This means our future generations would be blessed because of Christ’s blessing, love, and infinite power.

Another important aspect that Sue Edwards pointed out was discovering our true purpose in Christ. I am sure, like me, you might be at times struggling with what God’s purpose for your life is right now. I’m currently in College, still trying to figure out what career path, God wants me in. In Ephesians 1:12, this verse explained that our purpose in Christ was to trust him and bring praise and glory to Him. This immensely means that believers must know that their purpose in life is to bring glory to Him through whatever they are doing. You can bring splendor to God by using your talents and gifts to further the Kingdom of God. Your purpose might be to be a husband, wife, stay at home mother, stay at home dad, running a business, being an employee, serving people in your community, and going on missions. Every single person is called by God to do a special purpose to bring Him glory. And where and whatever you are doing is an act of worship to our loving Creator. Not everyone has to be in ministry and it takes all kinds of kinds to influence the world and shine the light of Christ in different places.

I intensely hope that you will be joining us in this wonderful study of Ephesians by Sue Edwards! Together, we can learn more about Christ and God’s written Word. And also please check back each Friday on my blog through November 18 for more insights into the amazing study!
