Lies I Taught in Medical School: How Conventional Medicine Is Making You Sicker and What You Can Do to Save Your Own Life by Robert Lufkin, MD Book Review

This book is an excellent resource to use to better our overall health. He explained how he was slightly overweight. He has high blood pressure and was prediabetic. He shared how he knew he had to make a change. He started to avoid sugar, processed carbs and seed oils, and grains. He made a choice to skip breakfast and lunch. He was able to get off some of his medications. In the book, he explored the lies that he was taught in medical school. One of these was being about obesity and how a calorie is just a calorie. The most eye-opening chapters was about the plan. He stated how we can be healthy if we choose just when eat. He suggested eating only within an 8-hour time frame. This allows your body time to rest and help change your metabolic health. He also included tips on sleeping better and practicing relaxing techniques. He looked at brain exercise you can do to improve your brain. He encouraged readers to get regular exercise and tracking down how much you do. He shared how we can learn to manage our stress. When we are a pet owner it has been linked to longer health and can teach us unconditional love.

I would recommend this awesome book on all the lies he taught in medical school and how he covered diabetes, fatty liver, hypertension, cancer, Alzheimer, and much more. It was very well researched and he shared studies and how things have changed in the medical field. The plan was very helpful in reversing and helping to prevent some of these diseases. I liked how he opened up about he made his own lifestyle changes to improve his health. What I noticed that was interesting is how actor, Josh Duhamel endorsed this book.

Crushing Cancer: A Patient’s Complete Guide to Managing a Cancer Diagnosis by Dr. Kerry A. Forrestal, MD Book Review

In Crushing Cancer, Dr. Kerry A. Forrestal has written a book walking readers through the process of what to do when first diagnosed with cancer. He is an emergency medical doctor and has firsthand experience in helping to treat patients. As of the writing of this book in 2019, there is an estimated 1,762,450 of Americans who will be diagnosed with cancer. 14,483,830 people are living with cancer. 15 million are currently in remission or cured. In the book, he shared a heartbreaking story about his grandfather and how he was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic disease. Kerry was seven years old at the time and he recalls a phone conversation with him explaining to him that he was just hit in the head with a brick and that he would be okay. His grandfather served in the war but he couldn’t stand to be honest with him and explain the truth that he really had cancer. In the book, he first begins by exploring what causes cancer and how each cell varies and can become damaged. He clarified how the doctors classify the TNM system of staging cancers. The book will explore how to manage the budget, what to expect when doing the tests, hospice, funeral arrangements, how to manage our emotions, just to name a few.

One of the impactful chapters discussed who to tell and who not to tell. He shared how if you are up for a promotion or a new position at work, we can choose to be careful about what we choose to tell. He shared how we may to take into consideration what stage we are in and how long recovery is expected to take. There are times where it would be wise to reveal it at work and not wise. He included helpful tips on helping you to decide who to tell and who not to. He also went into detail about the ADA act and if the cancer would be classified as a protected disability. This was shocking to read about how some cancers are and some aren’t. He also included helpful advice in how to tell kids and other loved ones about our cancer diagnosis.

I would recommend this life changing book to anyone who is battling cancer or they have a loved one that currently is. I lost my grandmother a few years ago to cancer and had a few other family members who had gone through cancer. I wish I would have had this impactful book years ago. I thought the author was very knowledge in the medical field and he tries to assist readers through their cancer battle. It covered a vast field of information and tons of research. The book also enclosed a deep dive section, storyteller, soapbox, pro tip, lingo alert, and special QR codes filled with more info and some are videos. There is a helpful checklist before you began the fight against cancer. I liked how he also included financial spreadsheets and will help readers to budget. I also thought the healthcare section was very beneficial and it covered a power of attorney and the different types, DNI, living will, and medical history.

Ordinary on Purpose: Surrendering Perfect & Discovering Beauty Amid the Rubble by Mikala Albertson, MD Book Review

In Ordinary on Purpose, Mikala Albertson explored the power of laying down the need for a perfect life and instead learning to appreciate and finding the beauty in everyday life. She opened up in the book about how she tried to hide from others about her failing marriage and how her husband was addicted to drugs and alcohol for over seven years. She was also raising two children at the time. She begins the book by sharing how she tried to blend in and to be a chameleon in high school and college. She strived to be perfect and to fit in whatever circle she was currently in. She got good grades and went on to become a doctor and appeared to be a good student. But she also shared how she would do pot, drink, and do things to follow the circle of her peers. She opened up about how worried she was that she would discover her husband has died because of his addiction. She shared how she tried to heal him and to pull him out of his pit. She revealed how attending meeting and opening up about her troubled marriage and her husband addictions she was able to get healing in ways she didn’t expect. She was finally able to stop pretending that her life was all together and perfect. She revealed how God was there for her and how He assisted her in forgiving and healing from the pain.

I would recommend this inspiring book to anyone who is tired of pretending to have their life all together. This book will remind readers that nobody has a perfect life and we can find healing when we learn to surrender and embrace the ordinary in life. I liked how open and raw she was in sharing with readers details about her marriage and how she had dealt with her husband being addicted. I immensely loved how she revealed how she found healing and forgiveness and was able to repair their marriage. I also loved how she shared how he was able to break free from his addictions. This book is powerful in assisting readers on learning to break free from perfection.

Jesus Daily: 365 Interactive Devotions by Aaron Tabor, MD Book Review and Giveaway

My Review:

Jesus Daily is an excellent new interactive devotional written by Aaron Tabor, founder of popular Facebook page, Jesus Daily. Each month covers a different theme and some of these themes are “Jesus is the answer, Jesus Heals, Jesus Changed My Life”, and much more. The book contains beautiful illustrations to draw readers into God’s Holy presence. It also has a nice ribbon bookmark in it to help you find the next day easier. Each day has a main scripture verse and a wonderful lesson to encourage readers through this difficult walk of life. It also enclosed a connect feature which is designed to ignite readers into reaching out and interacting with others and showing them the love of Christ.

I was selected to post my review today, December 3.

Today’s teaching told the story of the angel appearing to Mary telling her that a child was going to be born to her. Mary was told she would conceive and have a son and to name him Jesus. The angel assured her to not be afraid because she found favor from God. Imagine for a minute that an angel just appeared to you declaring you’re carrying God’s chosen child who would forever change the entire world. If you can’t imagine an angel appearing before you, then picture waiting for the results of an EPT test. Like most people who have ever taken a pregnancy test, you have mixed emotions: excitement, fear, and maybe even a little scared to death waiting for those long results to see if one’s on the way or more than one. Not to mention, Mary was engaged to be married and it wasn’t Joseph’s child. As we all know people would gossip and pass judgment and believe they had premarital sex even when it wasn’t the truth. But when God gave Mary favor it changed her life and everyone around her for generations to come.

It’s always tough when our circumstances don’t look good in the natural and we don’t understand His plan for our life in this present moment. In the bigger scope of looking at life, we will eventually see that His plan is far better than we will realize. But one touch of God’s favor changed her life instantly and one touch of His favor can also change yours! That dry season and drought in your life dramatically can be changed with one touch of His favor! That couple who is having infertility problems one touch of God’s favor and boom you’re expecting. The adoption process that is taking forever and suddenly you receive an unexpected call that you’re approved for adoption and everything works out. The married couple who is angry and bitter at their spouse and can’t even stand sleeping next to their spouse anymore and one touch of His favor and hearts are soften and love is rekindled. The breakup that has almost killed you’re self-worth and you’re thinking you will never find love again and one touch of God’s favor and boom you fall in love again and this time it’s with a way better person. You lost your job and you’re struggling to find another one and boom with God’s favor you find a way better job. That person who has an addiction and is struggling to be set free, one touch of God’s favor and you’re craving is gone. Sickness and disease is causing you to have immense fear in your life and one touch of His power and your body is healed.

Today’s devotional reminded me to always remember to notice the favor of God in small and big things. Favor can be simple things such as someone giving you a good parking space to bigger things such as receiving an unexpected financial blessing. It’s viral to take the time and pay attention to God’s favor in your life.

I would highly recommend checking this devotional out and seriously letting it help you to refocus on enjoying God’s presence.
