Encouraging Words for a Discouraging World: 10 Biblical Promises to Bring Comfort in Chaos by Dr. David Jeremiah Book Review

In Encouraging Words for a Discouraging World, Dr. David Jeremiah has written a new book to embolden readers with a special resilience to overcome challenges. We are all faced with upsetting news reports or we receive a dread phone call from a loved one. We get crushed to our knees in fear and discouragement. He explained how the Bible is filled with the knowledge and hope on how to survive in troubling times. He shared how Peter discussed God’s promises and how they can sustain our faith. His promises are infallible and will last until the end of time. Each chapter contained a short story, a short quote, questions, a spot to journal, and a prayer.

In the book, he opened up about how in 1994, he discovered he had a mass in his abdomen. It was lymphoma and he felt tired all the time. He shared how pain led him to diving into God’s word and he would study and reflect on God’s promises. He explored Paul and how he experienced thorns in his own life and satan was the one causing him to be buffeted. He had his own share of afflictions and scholars are mixed on all of the health issues he could have faced. This is directed to how God’s grace is sufficient to us and His strength is perfect in our weaknesses. He even asked God to remove the thorn three times in his life and God wouldn’t. God was still active in his life and gave the strength to continue on and run his race.

I would recommend this awesome book filled with true encouragement to inspire you while you are in the mist of feeling down and hopeless. I also appreciated how he stated the importance of journaling and remembering what past victories we have conquered. It was motivating to read about how David would journal and remember his past successes and gain wisdom from the past. We can use this as an inventory tool to recall God’s faithfulness in our lives. I liked how positive this book was and provide a rekindled hope for the future even when confronted with discouragement.

You Gotta Get Up: Grab Hold of Your Life After Being Knocked Down, Held Back, and Left Out by Kimberly Jones (Real Talk Kim) Book Review

In You Gotta Get Up, Kimberly Jones helps readers to become unstuck in their rut and pain and to get up again and live their lives. She begins the book by describing how she chooses to look at pain, rejection, and sadness like it’s a disco ball. We can be broken into thousands of small pieces and somehow God can still cause us to shine. She shared how rejection is God’s way of taking someone out of our future. She explained how at 36 years old she had to move back in with her parents with her two young sons. She had no income and her marriage was officially over. She shared how she was traumatized by the incredible pain. She compared parts of her story to the Samaritan woman and how she was judged from being married five times and currently living with a man. She came to the well and met Jesus. He helped her to heal and have hope again. He provided her a solution to become unstuck in life. Kimberly explained how she felt betrayed and rejected as well. She was able to let go of her failure and she realized that her past didn’t hold any influence over her life. She was able to explore her own stuckness in life and figure out all of the labels that were defining her. She offered a new and special way to get free of our imprisonment. She encouraged readers to ask “and” when they are dealing with their fear. These included you got fired, lied about, got divorced. We can use the and’s to move forward. This was very powerful tool to use against worry and asking ourselves questions to overcome our negative voices. We can learn to remember that our identity is not found in whatever things that have caused our pain.

One of my favorite chapters discussed how we need to stop living the lies that others have spoken over us. Many of us have fallen for and believed them, such as we won’t ever be loved, won’t succeed, and we aren’t good enough. If we fail victim to the lies and believe them, then they can become our reality. Instead, we need to care more about Jesus says about us. God is able to work everything out for our good. She explained how she turned all of her messes into our messages to help others. She explained how if we allow another person to control and determine our worth then this becomes like a modern-day idol. We must always remember that God thinks we are wonderfully made.

I would recommend this awesome book about choosing to get up again and living your life to the fullest. I immensely loved how she included multiple different Biblical stories throughout the book to explain the message of the book. I liked how she enclosed a story in each chapter about how her message has changed their lives whether it be a podcast, speaking event, or Sunday message. She also included a declaration and a prayer to assist us in getting up. The most powerful lessons in the book that I related to was the label many of us wear every single day. We fall into the rut of hanging on to what people have spoked over us and the things we have gone through. It was astonishing to read about how she was able to find her own healing through the pain she faced in her life and surrender to God.

#Struggles: Following Jesus in a Selfie-Centered World By Craig Groeschel Book Review

#Struggles is a book written to assist readers in regaining control of their lives and their use of social media. Craig Groeschel knows that we are becoming more addictive to all kinds of social media and we’re losing the connection of intimate relationships and friendships. Throughout this book, Craig explored eight Biblical values: contentment, intimacy, authenticity, integrity, encouragement, and many more to help us learn to balance our access in using social media.

The book begins discussing the topic of contentment and how many of us are looking at our friend’s Facebook’s, Pinterest, Instagram’s, and how we’re not content with what we have. We are constantly comparing what our friends are doing and what new items they have that we secretly want. Craig also shared an insightful survey about how students revealed how dissatisfied they were while looking at Facebook and how critical they felt towards themselves afterwards. The results of this survey wasn’t that all surprising to me because I could see how people could easily become so consumed with looking at what their friends are doing and becoming unhappy with their own lives.

Craig Groeschel categorized people’s envy into three categories: material and financial, relational, and circumstantial. This part of the book really hit home to me. I will admit that I have felt depressed while looking at what others are doing and how much farther along they appear to be in life. It is so easy to just get online and know everything that my friends are doing and being up to date. I realized that I struggle with relational envy and when I’m looking on Facebook or Instagram I always see a post about how someone else is getting into a new relationship and it’s going really well, someone got engaged, someone posting about their happy marriage, and someone expecting their first child. And I’m still single and can’t see to find the bliss and happiness in a relationship that other person appears to have. I know looking at my friends Facebook’s continuously only leaves me with the feeling of being jealous and envying what they have that I want. At the end of the day, I feel empty and wanting something more than I currently have. Craig shared that, “You will battle with discontent until you let Christ be all that you need” (Page 31). I really loved how Craig stated the importance of thanking God for blessing the other person’s life and praying that He would continue to do so. This is something I’m willing to do because I struggle with comparing and envying others.

I would recommend this life changing book to anyone who struggles with balancing their usage on social media sites. Social media is harming our relationships and friendships. This book will assist readers into recapturing control of their access to social media. I loved how Craig Groeschel shared tons of scriptures throughout the book. I liked how he presented how social media is affecting our Christian walk and how we can fix it. We don’t have to completely cut off social media, we just need to limit our usage and have safeguards in place. This book will guide readers into following Christ and not being distracted by social media. If you’re looking for an excellent book about social media and you’re wondering how to combat all of the dangers of being too obsessed with what others are doing, then read this book!

Thrive Student Edition: Digging Deep, Reaching Out By Mark Hall Book Review

Thrive is a book about thriving in this world and not living in survival mode and going through the motions of everyday living. It is written by Mark Hall lead singer of popular recording group Casting Crowns. Mark Hall strongly believes too many Christians are just trying to survive through this life when in fact Jesus came where we could live our life and live it abundantly. In part one of the book, he compared our lives to a tree and we need to have roots that run deep and that is only possible by digging into the word of God regularly. The next part is reaching out to others like branches on a tree.

I would recommend this life changing book especially to every single high school and college aged student. I liked how Mark Hall revealed personally details about how he struggled with negative thinking and seeing himself the way God saw him. He also openly admitted that after a long-term relationship ended he held a gun to his head and tried to take his own life. What helped him was digging into the word of God and listening to His voice instead of the enemy. Mark Hall also failed the entrance exam for music majors and he struggled to know what to do with his life. In this book, he is actively trying to assist students into discovering their gifts that God has given them and how to use it for His kingdom.

One of my favorite chapters was, “The Eagle and The Yardbird”. This story was basically about a lost eagle that was living with a bunch of chickens. The chickens believed he was just an ugly yardbird who wasn’t like the other chickens. He was chastised for shrieking instead of clucking. He was told to follow everyone else and act like them. He never knew he was an eagle and he had so much more in store for his life. I really connected with this story because so many people struggle to believe what God has declared over their lives and they struggle with accepting and loving themselves like God does. We get caught up in believing what other people say about us and we believe their lies. Mark Hall pointed out the one way to fix this is having our roots into the word of God. This book helped me to realize that I have to work on making sure my roots are planted on solid ground. If you’re looking for a book on thriving and living an abundant life, then read this book!

Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace By HeathLambert Book Review

In Finally Free, Heath Lambert is on a mission to assist readers in breaking the strongholds of pornography in their lives. Most people struggling with pornography use excuses as defense mechanics and they rationalize why it's completely normally for them to continue down a destructive path. He pointed out at the very beginning of the book that this book doesn't contains numerous statistics on the porn industry and it's effects on users. He has witnessed firsthand that sharing about the dangers of pornography, isn't bringing lasting freedom from this addiction. Instead, he tackles the issue from relying on the power of Jesus Christ to eliminate pornographic images from your life.

The first chapter sets up the fundamentals of the critical areas of understanding grace. Grace has two major aspects: forgiving grace and transforming grace. Forgiving grace means that all sins that we commit can be forgiven by the blood and debt paid by Jesus' death. This includes any and all sexual sins and immorality. Transforming grace means asking and believing that God can actually assist us in destroying our ties to sexual sins. Next, he goes into details and uses eight different key tools to conquer a pornography addiction.

One of my favorite chapters was, "Using Radical Measures to Fight Pornography." Heath Lambert suggests that people struggling with a pornography addiction must take a radical approach in your thought life, in your use of time, and cutting off access to porn. Only then will we win the victory in eliminating the control porn has over us. Managing your thought life starts with repenting for your sins and resisting sexual temptations. Next, it's important to remember scriptures to fight back against sexual sins. The third crucial key is leaning on support from trusted accountability partners and friends, and reaching out to them, and calling them when faced with temptations. The biggest difficult facet that Heath recommended was removing the technology equipment completely from your life that you are using to access porn images. Not everyone will have to go that far, but if sexual temptations are ensnaring you, and you can't break free, you may have to. If people who are looking at porn would seriously put into practice these protection measures, victory would be obtainable.

Another favorite chapter was, "Using Your Spouse (or Your Singleness to Fight Pornography". I immensely connected with the importance of striving for total purity with your spouse or future spouse. The way Heath Lambert shared about the dangers of the forbidden woman was truly life changing and eye opening. Scripture warns us repeatedly in Proverbs 5:1-14 about the dangers found in sexual immorality and the forbidden woman. He forbidden woman knows how to lure and seduce men with her words. But at the same time, she is trying to destroy and take the man into the path of destruction. Ultimately, in Proverbs 5:15-20, we learn about the positive effect of pursuing our wife and having an intimate marriage. Scripture also states that we are supposed to be fully content with our wife's physical body and we shouldn't be needing to lust after pornography.

I would strongly recommend this incredible book to anyone who is struggling with an active addiction to pornography, and they are truly sick and tired of the control it has over them. I would also recommend this amazing resource to anyone who knows someone who is fighting against pornography temptations and they are wanting to learn more about how to assist in helping their loved ones to win the final victory. This book is mainly written towards men and their sexual temptations, but it does include a few women stories and their challenges with pornography addiction and loneliness. I commend Heath Lambert in taking such a radical stance in beating sexual sins and temptations. The different methods on defeating the strongholds of sexual immorality prevalent in your life isn't going to be easy. I highly believe that if readers would firmly establish and activate the principles present in this book, their lives would be transformed completely. If you're seeking a wonderful book on breaking free from a pornography addiction, then read this book!

God in My Everything: How An Ancient Rhythm Helps Busy People Enjoy God By: Ken Shigematsu Book Review

In God in My Everything, Ken Shigematsu explored the paradox of the busyness of life and how we have many different things and events competing for our precious time and energy. Ken Shigematsu started the book off by sharing how he travelled to Ireland on a pilgrimage to visit and witness how the monks lived their everyday life devoted to their Creator. The monks built their entire lives on prayer, reading scriptures, and they lived near places where they could demonstrate the love of Christ. Ken Shigematsu has written this very book to encourage readers to develop their own “rules of life”. He referred to these rules as rhythm of practices that assisted us in creating and expressing our devotion to sharing the love of Christ to unbelievers, as well as, leading us into God’s presence more and more each day. Ken Shigematsu personally worked the long hours of 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and he eventually realized that he had to make a dramatic choice. He cut down on his long hours and formed his own rules of life where he could be the better husband and father.

He has conducted a spiritual ecosystem in order to describe the many different rhythms and practices we can construct to bring structure to God being at the center of our lives. He stated and reminded readers that the word “rule” comes from the Greek word, “trellis”. Trellis “is the support system for a vive or plant that enables it to grow upward and bear fruit” (Page 21). He used this concept as a way to define the three diverse roots, “Sabbath, prayer, and sacred reading.” Next, he reinforced the different components into three categories, “relate, restore, and reach out”. He also breaks down the components that consist of the three categories and he assisted readers into creating their own rules of life throughout the chapters.

On my favorite chapters was about friendship and the loneliness that is becoming more prevalent in our culture. With all of the social media connection abilities and new technology, most people would perceive that we would be able to network and have more friendships connections. But researchers are beginning to discover that isn’t entirely the case. “In 1985, only one in ten Americans reported having no close confidants; twenty years later, one in four said they had no close confidants” (Page 82). So if the technology advances isn’t making in any easier to make friendships, why do so many people spent so much time on them? Ken Shigematsu pointed out that Biblical, God declared that it wasn’t good for man to be alone, as we see when God gave Adam, his wife, Eve. But many people still believe that they can be John Wayne and be the lone ranger and they can go through this life alone. He also reminded readers of the story of David and Jonathan and how they both were true friends to each other and this is one of the realist form of friendship presented in the scriptures. I know there are countless people who long to have a true friend in their life. A true friend is one that you have the freedom to bear your soul and feelings and you know that they are going to listen to what’s on your heart. They will also at times speak the much needed truth into your life. Ken reinforced the importance of cultivating face to face activities, for example, praying together, playing sports or going on an adventure together, and serving the community in order to build the friendships.

Another favorite chapter of mine was the chapter on sex and spirituality. Ken Shigematsu revealed that our culture has an erroneous view regarding the effects of casual sex and how many people believe hooking up with random strangers has no effect on their lives. Scriptures declare that all sex is meant to bond us to a person- physically, spirituality, and emotionality. Ken recommends that married couples need to set clear defined boundaries to protect their marriage and to safe guard their marriages from affairs. He also stated the importance of resisting pornography and installing software to keep your accountable and you can even have accountable partners to fight against temptations. And if you’re are single and not married, we can still express our sexuality in healthy ways. For instance, we can connect with our friends over a meal and enjoy the assembly with another person in a healthy way. He encouraged married couples to save sex for their marriage and for single people to abstain from having sex until marriage and yes, we all know it’s difficult to do in a world that boldly says the opposite.

I would recommend this life changing and enhancing book to teenagers, college students, and adults who are seeking a deeper connection and longing to have greater intimacy with Christ. I immensely enjoyed the vast rules of life presented in this book to inspire readers to construct their own rhythms. This book taught me a great deal about monks and their tactic of life and how they worship their loving Creator throughout their day to day activities. This book has valuable questions at the end of each chapter to guide readers into considering what rules they can build to worship God in their everyday lives. I especially thought that including other people’s rules of life in the appendix added more beneficial resources to the overall content of the book. It assisted me in generating my own rules to lead me closer to Christ. If you’re seeking a book that will assist you in being intentional about how you manage your time and initiating your full devotion to God every single day, then read this book and begin to custom your own rules of life to make your life simpler and more focused on Christ!

NIV College Devotional Bible Book Review

The NIV College Devotional Bible is written to engage college aged students into reading the Bible and the devotionals presented in the Bible. This particular Bible has 222 devotionals on topics that college students will enjoy and it has a supportive appendix. The Bible has a “table of weights and measures, a subject index search, a one year reading plan, 60 day overview of the Bible, 30 days for beginning your walk with Christ, 30 days with Jesus, 20 not-so-famous Bible stories, 30 days of prayer, 30 days of promises, 30 days of leadership, 30 days of knowing God, 30 stories of great Faith”, and many more. The devotionals were spread throughout the Bible and they consisted of a personal or historic story entwined to a scripture passage. Each devotional also contained three critical questions for readers to contemplate on and to respond to.

One of the devotional for instance, discussed the hardship of death and the terrible agony of losing someone that you loved. This specific day dealt with 1 Corinthians 15:35-38 and Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth describing to them that when believers die, that isn’t the end for them. He explained that sting of death is sin but through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we have the final victory. The devotional told a personal story about Andy meeting with Pastor Tim for coffee. It had been a year since Andy lost his precious wife. They caught up like old friends on what happened and what they have been going through this past year. Andy admitted that he understands now what Paul stated in this passage about the sting of death and where pain hurts. Andy began to open up about the difficulty of witnessing your seven year old daughter and on her birthday, she makes a wish for her mother to return and came back to her. The pain hits Andy when he has to check ‘widowed’ in important documents. He also sees his little five year old son drawing pictures of mommy and she is far off from everyone else, looking down from Heaven. This is one devotional that is truly heartbreaking and sad. This one came in a significant time because this past weekend, I lost my great grandmother and I know that she lived a long life. But death still stings, no matter when it happens. This devotional and passage was a wonderful reminder that if we are saved and we know Jesus as our Savior, we will one day have victory over death.

I would recommend this astonishing Bible to every single college aged student. If readers will consider and read through the passages and devotionals spread out on these pages, their lives will be forever changed and impacted. Mediating on the scriptures was very easy and user friendly with this Bible. I really liked and connected with was beneficial section in the back of the Bible. I immensely loved the “thirty days of promises” featuring “when satan attacks you”, “when you’re waiting for an answer to prayer”, “when you’re uncertain about the future”, and more valuable passages. I enjoyed the design of the hardcover Bible and it was very appealing and it reminded me of school colors. This would be a phenomenal resource and graduation gift to any high school student entering college and any college student.

Days Like These: Even in the Darkest Moment, Light Can Shine Through By Kristian and Rachel Anderson Book Review

In Days Like These, Kristian and Rachel Anderson has written this book to display that even when the circumstances of life throw us off course and we can’t see the light from the darkness that surrounds us, God is still there in the mist of the storms. The book began as blog posts from Kristian’s website until it grew to a fan base of billions of users reading about his journey and challenges. Later his wife decided to turn the blog post into a book where he could leave behind a legacy to his two young boys. Kristian married Rachel and they had two boys under the age of three and they lived in Australia. At the age of thirty-four, Kristian Anderson started to get a little stich in his side and he noticed that he had a little blood in his bowel movements. He eventually went to the doctor and they discovered that he had a blood clot on his lungs. But it turned out that the used a voice recognition software to file the reports and it misheard the doctor said no blood clot present. The doctors did notice that he had something on the bottom of his lung and they ran more tests and found out that he had cancer. The cancer was located in his bowel and it was wrapped around 75 percent of his colon and it already was spreading to the liver. When he found out he had cancer, they had to make a decision together. Rachel desperately wanted to have four children and the chemo had a risk factor of damaging his sperm and they might not be able to swim. He went to the In Vitro Fertilization to save some healthy samples. Kristian underwent chemo and many different medicines to try and kill the cancer cells. He shared all of the details and his emotions throughout the book in his brave battle for his life. At the end of each chapter, Rachel also expressed her thoughts and concerns about the battle against cancer alongside her husband. Unfortunately, Kristian lost his battle with cancer on January 2, 2012.

Kristian also made a very personal memorable birthday video for Rachel’s birthday. He was holding up signs with his two young boys to show his wife how much he truly loved her. He also got Huge Jackman to appear in the YouTube video. The video finally went viral and was seen all over the world and it even reached the eyes of Oprah Winfrey. This video is one that will have you in tears! Oprah also had Kristian and Rachel appear on her show when she was in Australia and Microsoft donated an enormous amount of money to assist them with their medical bills.

One of the private stories that he conversed was about a conversation he had with his youngest son, Jakob while putting him to bed. Kristian told him that he would always love him and would be in his heart forever, no matter what occurs. He kept reinforcing to his son that he would live in his heart and he was explaining that sometimes when you’re very sick you have to go away and you can’t return. His oldest son, Cody overheard the conversation and screamed with tears running down his creeks and declared, “YOU CAN’T LEAVE! Why are you going, and why can’t you come back? There’s only one daddy for a family, and you’re our daddy…and… and… you can’t go!” (Page 182). This like any parent caused Kristian to break down and cry. This was the most exquisite piece of the book that touched me emotionally. I can’t even began to imagine having to say goodbye to your spouse or children.

I would recommend this marvelous book to anyone who is looking for some hope in their life and it is a great book for someone battling cancer. This is the first book that I have read that I will admit to having cried and have gotten teary eyed while reading it. It was a heartbreaking book to read about Kristian’s journey through having cancer and he still managed to trust God. I immensely appreciated how he revealed the details of his roller-coaster ride of getting a little better to getting worst to getting better, and so on. I haven’t had cancer but I lost an aunt to cancer and a few other people that I know to the horrible disease. I specially loved the numerous scripture verses Kristian included and the positive confidence that Christ wouldn’t fail him or his family.

I love how transparent Kristian was and he shared his feelings about the pain of having to battle cancer. He was very expressive and he described the terrible symptoms he dealt with each and every day. Kristian’s love story about loving his wife and sons was evident throughout the book, and it made me want to be the kind of brave and courageous man, husband, and father that he was. I’m not even married yet and I don’t have kids yet but it presented me with an example of an extraordinary man to look up to. In reading his book, I felt the love he had for his beautiful wife and his handsome two boys and he tried to cherish them with each passing moment. I liked how Rachel was candid about how she felt when she saw the person that she loved struggling and in extreme agony. She was very genuine about describing her dreams to have more children and how she begged him to try to get her pregnant before he underwent chemo. He refused to try because he feared if something happened to him he didn’t want her to have to take care of three children alone. I liked how the book showed how it affected her through his sickness and that she had a difficult time too. If you’re looking for an inspiration book that will give you hope even when we don’t understand, why pain and sickness must exist, then this book will impact you and point you to the light and hope of Jesus Christ!
