Unlocking Your Family Patterns: Finding Freedom for a Hurtful Past By Dr. Henry Cloud, Dave Carder, Dr. Earl Henslin, and Dr. John Townsend

In Unlocking Your Family Patterns, Dr. Henry Cloud, Dave Carder, Dr. Earl Henslin, and Dr. John Townsend explained the path to healing and overcoming your family hurts. Each chapter of the book is written by one of the four authors. The book explored the dynamics of David, Isaac, Jesus, and their family trees. For example, David slept with Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba. She becomes pregnant with David’s child. He ordered his army to pull back in the battle lines. Uriah is killed and Bathsheba loses the baby. David’s son Amnon raped his own sister Tamar. David doesn’t comfort the issue of what happened to his daughter and it wasn’t discussed and dealt with. Absalom eventually kills Amnon. You have to handle the issues in your life or they get passed to the next generation. The authors proved that they are many things to learn about healing from our pasts. History repeats itself unless we deal with the major issues. Families pass on the concepts of “Don’t Talk”, “Don’t Feel”, and “Don’t Trust” to multiple generations if the cycle isn’t broken. The book also contains discussion questions at the end of each chapter.

I have to say that with the book being written by four different authors they did a wonderful job of tying the material together in a helpful way. This book has immensely taught me the lessons that I don’t want to pass down to my kids. I see the need to heal from the past where I can move forward. I would highly recommend this helpful book to everyone. I am starting to see the traits that my family has taught me through the years. I learnt the different levels of bonding in relationships. I tend to stay in level two which is the level where people discuss events but you don’t share too much about things you’re going through. Walling yourself in and keeping a safe distance from others doesn’t help you achieve the intimacy in relationships that you need. The boundaries chapter also greatly opened my eyes. I have a difficult time saying no especially to family members! I would always feel the need to carry their problems and do things I didn’t want to do out of guilt. I also had the feelings that I was being selfish if I didn’t help them. I realize I’m not setting proper boundaries in the places they need to be placed. I found out I was codependent and not choosing how I want to live my life. The chapter about growing into adulthood was another area that I saw that I struggled with. I was feeling one down to other peers and I always thought I couldn’t ever compare to them. I thought they were so much higher up than me. I am starting to go through the process of achieving adulthood! This book really was an enormous life changing book for me. It exposed me to the truth and revealed to me the issues I haven’t seen before. If you’re struggling to heal from your past family hurts then read this book! If you don’t want to repeat something that happened in your family then pick up a copy of this book. It will help you to step forward without letting the pains from your past control your family and the next generation of your family!

Unashamed to Bear His Name: Embracing the Stigma of Being a Christian By R.T. Kendall Book Review

In Unashamed to Bear His Name, R.T. Kendall explored the stigmas that come with serving Christ. R.T. Kendall was humiliated and picked on in his childhood because he attended church. He remembered the pain that he had to endure. When he got older, he encountered the people who peer pressured him and he saw how their lives turned out. He now gladly accepts the stigmas that come with following Christ. The book contains Bible stories from Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Leah and Rachel, David, and many more people in the Old Testament. They had to deal with the persecution of being rejected and made fun of for what they believed in. This book will lead you to not be ashamed of the Gospel and being a Christian.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is afraid of standing up for what they believe in. If you’re ashamed to tolerate the stigmas of following Jesus then this book will assist you into overcoming them. I realized the world will not always get the reason we believe in God and his word. Some people just don’t understand what they haven’t witnessed. Being a Christian might cause some to reject what God has appointed and approved but it’s worth the risk and price.  R.T. Kendall did a great job covering all the types of stigmas that Christians will have to experience in their lifetimes. Even though the road will not be easy we have to be unashamed of being a Christ follower.

Reversing Diabetes By Don Colbert, MD Book Review

In Reversing Diabetes, Don Colbert revealed the epidemic concerning the growing number of patients diagnosed with diabetes. He shared the following statistics from the 2011 CDC report, “nearly twenty-six million people have diabetes, or 8.3 percent of the US population” (Page 11). Diabetes has increased rapidly because of the chemicals that are being produced in our foods. Another reason is our society is becoming inactive and not doing any activities that promote good health. The book will teach readers what kinds of foods are healthy and what foods that they will need to avoid. He discussed the hidden contributors that lead to obesity and diabetes. The book also contains a meal plan to guide readers in reducing their waist size. Reducing your waist size lowers your chance of getting diabetes and it helps to control diabetes if you already have it.

I don’t have diabetes but it runs in my family blood line. I learned a great deal of information about taking steps to prevent getting diabetes. I would recommend this book to everyone because it is an extremely important topic that we all have to stand up against. Diabetes can happen to anyone and the book helped me to see the effects and dangers of consuming all the wrong types of foods. The book suggested starting to drink green tea because it assisted in relieving stress levels and scorching fat! “The EGCG in green tea increases the metabolic rate for as long as twenty-four hours and stimulates the body to burn fat” (Page 121). It also helps decrease your risk of getting diabetes and some cancers! I took the book’s advice and have started drinking a few cups a day. I am also started eating healthier foods and working out four days a week. This book is a wonderful guide in becoming healthy and living a long life!

Spirit Wars: Winning the Invisible Battle Against Sin and the Enemy By Kris Vallotton Book Review

In Spirit Wars, Kris Vallotton wrote an awesome book on the spiritual world and how to stand against the demonic forces that are attacking us. Kris has experienced firsthand attacks from Satan and his demonic forces. He has suffered from panic attacks and depression. He became free! Vallotton discovered Nehemiah teaches believers the ways Satan attacks believers. Nehemiah was trying to rebuild the walls and gates around Jerusalem. Sanballat criticized Nehemiah by trying to stop him from rebuilding the walls. The devil is still present in today times and he is trying to stop believers from fulfilling the call of God on their lives. The devil makes us doubt our gifts and talents, he likes us to throw questions into our minds, he makes us lose our Faith in God, and so much more. Readers will learn about the armor of God and how to stand strong. The book contains chapters on “How to Cast out Demons” and “Generational Curses”.

The book was very eye opening and it was the best book that I have read on understanding the devils schemes. I have realized the importance of standing on the truth of God’s word. I have struggled with the spirit of depression and it was very comforting that Kris Vallotton came through his attacks. He also shared a story that many students entered College with feelings of anxiety. He noticed that they were getting closer to God’s purpose in their life and the enemy was trying to get them to remain in bondage. I have experienced the attack of fear and loss of sleep when I entered College. I connected with this story and saw what the enemy was trying to accomplish. I would recommend this wonderful book to everyone because we need to understand that we are in a fight. Satan is throwing conflicts right in front of our very lives. This book will encourage readers to stand strong in the last days and it will help you to know what you aren’t alone. The enemy is attacking us but we must stand on the truth of God’s word. If you’re struggling with spirits of depression, fear, addictions, and many other kinds of attacks just remember that they are from Satan. I gained a lot of knowledge from this book and I believe it will help you too!

Healing Your Church Hurt: What to Do When You Still Love God but Have Been Wounded by His People By Stephen Mansfield Book Review and GIVEAWAY

In Healing Your Church Hurt, Stephen Mansfield revealed the importance of forgiveness and letting your church hurts go. Most of us who have attended church have experienced some kind of offense from other Christians. The offense turns into strive and bitterness and some of us refuse to let it go. Holding on to anger doesn’t ever solve the issues in our souls. It doesn’t hurt the other person it only enslaves you. Mansfield shared a dream about his offenders standing in front of him begging for forgiveness. But he realized that he isn’t God and he isn’t the judge. He encouraged readers to let the people who hurt us out of the cages we have put them in. We can only be truly free when we choose to let the hurts go!

I would recommend this helpful book to anyone who has been hurt by a church. I have been wounded by a church and I have held onto it for many years. I made a decision to finally release my offenses that have captivated me. I can’t tell you how much freedom came when I let unforgiveness go! This book brought much needed healing to my soul. I even went back to the church I was hurt at to hear one of my cousins preach his first sermon. Before I can tell you that I wouldn’t have done that. I would have still held on to the hurts and let them control me. I even hugged some of the people that I had bitterness in my heart for. But I felt the chains of the past starting to fall! Then the next week we received a phone call and someone that I saw at church got into a car wreck and died. If I wouldn’t have forgiven the members of that church I wouldn’t have attend the service that Sunday to see this person one last time. This person wasn’t someone that hurt me but normally, I wouldn’t have even gone to that church. Everything happens at just the right time! Life is way too short to hold on to offenses that are only destroying you! Forgive and let it go!!! This book will assist you through the process of healing your church hurt!!
