Prayer Starters: Talking with God about Hard Times by Suzanne Eller Book Review

In Prayer Starters, Suzanne Eller has written a book to encourage readers to pray more and this book provided a helpful starter prayer to get you in the right mood. The book contained 90 prayer starters. She begins the book by explaining how she was reminded of God and His strength. She felt broken and was about to give a teaching to encourage others. A woman walked up to her and gave her a picture of a tree with Jeremiah 17:7-8 on it. This verse discussed a man is blessed when you trust in God. It compared him to being like a tree planted and he doesn’t fear about anything from a lack of water to being unable to bear any fruit. She explained how she was reminded that our strength come from Christ and we have immensely power when we have our roots in God’s written word. The book begins each day with a special prayer or a reminder to keep us focus on Christ’s power. There is open space to answer questions and journal about whatever we feel led to. The closing of the day ends with a verse.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is seeking a book on prayer and a conversation starter. I immensely loved how easy the book was to read and how you can use it as a journal to dig deeper into the Word and in our relationship with Christ. One of my favorite days discussed the importance of shutting down the voice of condemnation. She explained how truth can be our ally and we can learn to discern the difference between our inner critic and our inner conviction. Christ will never condemn us for our mistakes and our failures. This book is a wonderful benefitable teaching on prayer and opening up with God about our struggles and allowing Him to help guide us during the difficult times.

My Review:

In My Jesus, Anne Wilson has written an autobiography about her life story and shared the true meaning behind her first number one hit song, “My Jesus”.  Anne grew up in Kentucky and has a deep connection to living in the country. She has two older siblings, Jacob and Elizabeth. In the beginning of the book, she opened up about adventures they got themselves into growing up. In the book, she also shared that her childhood dream was to become an astronaut and she wanted to attend school in Florida where she would have a chance to work for NASA.  She shared how when she was ten years old, she had a dream to run a summer camp and it grew every year that it had to move from her home to her local church. They would all help run it as a family affair. Everything changed when on June 7, 2017 Jacob died in a terrible car accident. A car ran a yellow light and he tried to avoid the crash and hit an electrical pole. She described the events that happened after that and the whole family experiencing deep grief. At the funeral, she chose to sing in front of audience for the very first time and performed, “What A Beautiful Name” to honor him. Later on, she made a video and uploaded it when people kept asking her to record a video. It led to a door opening and she met a talent scout. He helped her to get a chance at a record contact and she eventually signed with Capital Christian Music Group.

I would recommend this life changing book to anyone who enjoys reading a Christian music artist autobiography. I have read quite a few over the years and this is going to be another big top hit on the New York Bestsellers list. I first heard the song a little over a year ago and I thought the lyrics were very powerful and I could see why people connected with the song. The song is also co-written by Matthew West and anything he touches instantly becomes a hit. I loved hearing about the writing session and how that happened. I deeply liked the message of this book and how she opened up about the pain of losing her brother and how it changed them all and how she was able to handle the heartbreak. I also loved the note from Anne section at the end of each chapter and how she tried to encourage readers about what she learned.

A Psalm for Every Season: 30 Devotions to Discover Encouragement, Hope and Beauty by Arnold R. Fleagle Book Review

In A Psalm for Every Season, Arnold R. Fleagle has written a new 30-day devotional that covered 30 important passages in psalm. He begins the book by explaining the word psalms in Hebrew and Greek. When we combine these meanings, we get praise songs. We can also view as the book of psalms as a big chapter filled with praise music. Jonah, Jesus, Peter, and Paul, all quoted them when they were each faced with their own challenges. He begins the book by exploring how we can be blessed as believers and how we can choose not to walk in the path of the wicked. There is that old saying that we are most like the five closer people we associate with regularly. We are also influenced by what we read/ watch. We can instead choose to follow God and His teachings and listen to the counselor. It’s extremely critical to follow God’s written word and medicated on the words.

One of my favorite chapters was the one that discussed a strategy for a good night’s sleep. David faced many enemies and was constantly faced with them bringing harm to him. He stated how the Lord will protect him and how he can sleep in perfect peace and rely on the safety from the Lord. This will remind readers that God will protect them while they are at rest and they don’t have to worry. One of David’s enemies was his own son, Absalom who was attempting to take his own father’s throne. David chose to respond by praying to God, believing that He would protect him, and chose not to allow fear inside.

I would recommend this life changing devotional to anyone who is looking for a hopeful, peaceful, and fruitful devotional. I immensely liked how the author went into great detail about the truths found in psalms. I liked how easy it was to read a devotional a day and they are short and quick to read. I also enjoyed the illustrations and how it helped to brighten up the message and keep you engaged in the reading. Each day contained a short story, a few verses, a compelling thought, and a comforting prayer. I really enjoyed how the devotionals enclosed helpful encouragement for every season of your life.

A Gift of Joy and Hope by Pope Francis Translated from the Italian by Oonagh Stranksy Book Review

In A Gift of Joy and Hope, Pope Francis is a book with the goal to teach readers about the power of a smile- that many of us have lost from our childhood. He explained how Jesus is God’s smile and how Jesus died for our sins. All we need to do is look around to see the countless ways in which God smiles at His people. He explained how darkness is become more mainstream and we are losing our hope. We can discover great hope in coming to our Heavenly Father and receiving His rest. We don’t have to live overworked and tired all the time. We can see hope when we look in the face of a child and we are seeing them smile back at us. God can provide us with a smile if we chose to realize that we are in face His child.

One of my favorite chapters touched on the topic of sadness. We can obtain freedom from depression and sadness when we chose to provide service to others and becoming united as community. We can become like the disciples of Christ and live for Christ. Pope Francis explained how there is a famine of hope in the world and how we can transmit hope out unto the world. He encouraged readers to throw themselves into the arms of their Father and to always remember that He loves us. He revealed how important the church is and how it needs us to be at peace, showing compassion, being in communion, praying, and to bear witness to others.

I would recommend this amazing book on the teaching of Pope Francis to anyone who is seeking a positive book filled with the teachings of Christ. I immensely enjoyed how he discussed the power of smiling and how many of us don’t know how to laugh, smile, or cry anymore. I liked how in the book he shared what we can learn from children and to get our hope and joy back. I truly believe if we would listen to the teaching in this book and God’s word then we would see more kindness in the church and outside the walls of the church. I also liked how at the end of the book he included a special interview and prayers we can pray.

Say Goodbye to What Holds You Back: Shatter the Walls Surrounding You and Believe What God Says About You By Krissy Nelson Book Review

In Say Goodbye to What Holds You Back, Krissy Nelson explored the twelve most common walls that women have built us around their lives. Some of these included, “I’ll never be good enough, there’s something wrong with me, but I might fail, I’m all alone, I’m so overwhelmed”, and much more. She teaches readers how to break down the walls and to obtain true freedom. In the book, she shared how she struggled with her own feelings of not being good enough to be a writer and that she should just quit. She begins the book by revealing how eight out of ten millennials don’t feel that they are good enough compared to others. She explained what shame is and how easy it is for us to fall into the deadly trap. This causes us not to be able to move forward. She explored the story of the Samaritan woman and how she was asked by Jesus for a drink and this was greatly frowned upon because the Samaritans and the Jews don’t associate. As we will see, she had a root of shame in her life but she is taught a lesson about the true living water and her shame is broken.

One of my favorite chapters discussed the power of saying no and stop overcommitting and adding more to our plates. Krissy opened about how she would wake up in the middle of the night being stressed to the max. She was worrying about everything and feeling overwhelmed. She explained how we handle whatever may come and not allowing ourselves to become stretched too thin. One of the ways, she encouraged readers to organize their life is to seek Jesus and listen to what he wants us to focus on with her time. Jesus has given us peace and we don’t have let our hearts to be troubled.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is ready to break free from their walls. This book is a powerful book on helping women to get free and to break the chains that are holding them back from living their full life. I loved how transparent Krissy was in this book and how she openly shared her own struggled of not being enough, dealing with insecurity, and fear. I especially loved how each chapter contained a verse, Jesus says, declare it, apply it, and a prayer. I also liked how she divided the chapters into the trap, the wall shatters, and moving forward. I think this helped to keep the content all neatly together.

Reorganized Religion: The Reshaping of the American Church and Why It Matters by Bob Smietana Book Review

In Reorganized Religion, Bob Smietana explored the reasons why people are leaving churches and how this affecting us. He begins the book by looking at the criticism popular Christian, author and pastor, Beth Moore. In 2017-2020, Beth Moore’s Living Proof Ministries lost an estimated $3 million dollars. She was facing backlash from opposing Trump and his views. She also chose to leave her denomination. She still believes in Christ but wasn’t happy with all of the religious leaders and didn’t think they were following God’s call. He also explained the role of Russell Moore and his challenges with organized religion. He revealed many different studies in the book and some have discovered that white Americans are the most group leaving the church. He revealed how grandparents are still going to church regularly and we are witnessing a dramatic decline in the youth not attending church at all. He also looked at how the church makes a difference in the lives of others and they are mainly the ones behind food pantries and meal programs. If churches were to close who would help others. There is also a major decline in church attendance since Covid-19 and it’s estimated to be at one-third of people haven’t returned to the church and there is also a decrease in volunteers. Some of the members are watching online. He explained how many attended churches in habit then covid broke the habit and people haven’t been able to get back into the habit of going to church. He ended the book by sharing some views from others are considering to help change the future of the church.

I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is tired of the old religious systems and they are seeking a new approach to church. This book was very eye opening on understanding what the church is facing and how covid has changed the system and how we can move forward in the future. I honestly haven’t heard about either Beth Moore or Russell Moore and why they have stepped away from their denominations and all of the backlash they were facing. I loved how he treated the book as a reporter and he tried to stick with just sharing views from others and studies to allow readers the freedom to decide for themselves.

about the power of a praying mama! #PaulsPromiseMIN

• Paul’s Promise is the inspiring true story of Paul Holder

field, a bigoted firefighter-turned-pastor, who started one

of the first integrated churches in the south.

• “Excellent presentation of a life changed by Jesus” - Fred Higgins from Assembly of God

• Synopsis: Set in the peak of the 1960s Civil Rights movement, “Paul's Promise” is the inspiring true story of Paul Holderfield, former racist firefighter-turned-pastor who started one of the first integrated churches in the American South. It’s one man’s journey to hope and healing during a troubled time in our Nation’s history that resulted in one man’s decision to serve God and stand up to injustice - a story that continues to make a huge impact on the community to this day.

My Review:

I immensely enjoyed watching this new film that touched on racist and segregation in a difficult time. It was heartbreaking to see how Paul would ignore his best friend who happened to be Black when in front of his other peers. Paul’s character was also a guy who had a serious addiction to drinking and he didn’t treat others very nicely especially his wife. It was very enlightening to see Paul eventually change his life around and choose to service God and he started one of the first integrated churches in a time where it wasn’t approved was frowned upon. It reminded me of a modern story of Saul become Paul in scriptures. I also thought how they included Paul’s mother battling health issues added to the dynamic change of Paul. She was a praying woman who wanted her son to carry on and pray for her prayer list. I also liked how they had Dean Tanaka in this film playing the captain. He is always good in whatever he stars in. Many fans will recognize him from Christmas movies to serious crime roles. This film displayed a powerful message about loving others and always remembering that anyone can change and sometimes that starts with a simple prayer.

Brave Quest: A Boy’s Interactive Journey into Manhood by Dean Briggs Book Review

In Brave Quest, Dean Briggs has written a brand-new book about a fantasy adventure featuring a short story about transitioning into adulthood. They explored the valley of curves, the hall of shame, the palace of pleasure, the cliffs of cowardice, just to name a few areas. The book is geared towards boys aged 12 to 16 years old. The author come up with this helpful book because he has seven sons and he was seeking a book to assist in helping them into manhood. It is written in the style of 50 daily devotionals. He encouraged readers to start reading it fifty days before their next birthday. Each day included a scripture verse, short story, and questions and writing space to allow readers to write down their own thoughts and stories.

I would recommend this wonderful devotional to every single young boy into helping them transition into manhood. I really enjoyed how he did this as an adventure book to engage boys into reading and learning skills that will benefit them and change their lives. I immensely loved the story about Miss Terry and how the author used this story to describe the dangers of lust and seduction. She is compared to Potiphar’s wife and how she tried to lure Joseph away into her arms. I thought this was a very eye-opening discussion about lust, porn, and the temptations we all face. I also liked how he wrote a character of True Man and his wisdom he tries to share to the Questor. I loved the scene describing a boy reflecting and looking into the water and seeing him change into a man. Our jawline is angled, muscles being refined, hands turning to man hands. I liked how he compared this to seeing different versions of who we are and what we have endured. I liked how he encouraged boys to write down what they truly stand for where they won’t fall for just anything.

Giving Your Words: The Lifegiving Power of a Verbal Home for Family Faith Formation by Sally and Clay Clarkson Book Review

In Giving Your Words, Sally and Clay Clarkson has written a helpful impactful book on speaking life giving words over our children’s lives. Sally explained how her own mother shared with her words that changed her life. These words were, “If God is for you, who can be against you?” This is a reminder that no matter what there is nothing that is bigger than God and His power. This book describes how we can create a verbal home in our house and speak life giving words. They begin by looking at how God speaks and spoke creation into being. They also looked at Moses and how he was given a word from the Lord, called the Shema. It covered Deuteronomy 6:4-7 and this state how we are commanded to love the Lord with all our hearts and soul. We are supposed to teach the word of God to our children all the time. The book explored the living words and speaking out the giving words. These words included words that are personal, loving, nurturing, believable, wisdom, and much more.

I would recommend this awesome book about speaking words over our children’s lives to every single parent or grandparent. This book has the potential to dramatically change our scope on parenting and benefit generations to come. One of my favorite chapters discussed love found in First Corinthians 13. I liked how they broke down the topic of love and how we are required to put on gentleness, forgiveness, patience, humility, compassion, and much more. They also revealed the ABCs of loving words and I immensely connected with the discussion of asking ourselves daily if the words we are providing to our children are loving or harmful. I also enjoyed how they shared the gifts found in life giving words. One of my favorites is the gift of explaining that our children are special and how they were given gifts from God and their personality was chosen for them.

The God Shot: 100 Snapshots of God’s Character in Scripture by Tara-Leigh Cobble Book Review

In The God Shot, Tara-Leigh Cobble has written a brand-new devotional. She chose to cover the New Testament. The goal of this book to help readers understand more of God’s character. Some of these included that God is peace, God of all nations, protects, joy, empowers us, patience, grace, saves, and much more. Each day directed us towards a name of God or an attribute of God.

The first day discussed Matthew 6:25 and how we aren’t supposed to be worried about what we will eat or drink or what we will wear. She explained the context of the verse and how Jesus was instructing us not to be anxious about anything. Everything in this life is fleeting and is passing away and it will only be temporary. Our focus should only be on what is to come and how we will one day be living with God in His Kingdom.

I would recommend this awesome devotional on short God’s shots to anyone is seeking a quick devotional to read daily for 100 days. I loved the message enclosed and how each day pointed to key feature of God’s character. One of my favorite devotionals was about how love will never end. But prophecies will, tongues, and knowledge will all fade away. I immensely loved how instead we can remember that love is the only thing that will truly matter and it will last until the end of time. I loved the style of the book and how easy it is to read.

Soul Care for the Battle: A Guided Journal by Susie Larson Book Review

A Soul Care for the Battle is a new journal to go along with her book Strong in Battle. She begins the journal by sharing how when the storm rage how we first lose our sense of direction. This journal will assist us in taking inventory of our life and connecting with God on a deeper level. The book first explored the topic of trials and how we view them and what we tell ourselves impacts the warrior we are supposed to become. She encourages readers to write down the current battles that is pressing on us, most concerning, background noise but bothersome. Each section included scriptures, spaces to write down our thoughts, questions, and a wide variety of tools to grow in our walk with Christ.

I would recommend this awesome journal to anyone who is seeking one to help them prepare for battle and to stand strong. One of my favorite things was when she discussed faith declaration and this stated how we speak with authority, how we are blessed, how we will triumph over our enemy. Another favorite area she covered was the thoughts that don’t belong in our brain. We can do this by instead focusing on redemptive phrases such as Ephesians 2:10. I loved how helpful the book was in writing down your thoughts and growing in our faith. This is a great tool to use in strength training to prepare for battle.

The Florence Legacy: A Novel by Lauraine Snelling Book Review

The Florence Legacy is a novel about friendships and seeing dreams fulfilled. Jade and Breeanna met at a writer’s conference and they always had a dream to travel to Italy and they wanted to see David. Something would also happen and they could never go. Jade unfortunately passed away before that dream could come true. Breeanna received a hand written letter from Jade gifting her money to use on a trip to Italy. The whole group of three women each received $10,000. Her daughter, Jessica wants the money for herself because she is behind on car payments and then this will cause her to lose her job. She tried to guilt trip her mother out of following her dream and instead to bail her out of her problems. She was firm in stating that she would no longer be rescuing her since the last time. We get to see some of her past with her ex-lover Dereck and bailing him out of jail. Her daughter seems to have lots of excuses and using guilt as a tool to try and manipulate others. Eventually, Breeanna does decide to go ahead with her trip to Italy but not first without experiencing some of her friend’s going through a funeral. She meets Pierre-Rene Dubois a guy who has a big dream of opening up a coffee shop that will be geared to help vets. They share a few romantic moments in the book.

I would recommend this amazing book filled with a wonderful story about friendship, love, and never giving up on your hopes and dreams. I loved seeing Breeanna dream come true and her getting to see Italy and it was interesting to read about her adventures. I connected with the story about Jessica and her using manipulation and guilt as a tactic to get help from others. This allowed her to never having to solve her own problems she could always depend on others if she ever got into binds. I know of one person in my own family that her story reminded me of and it gives me hope that maybe one day she can also learn to turn her own life around. I could see this novel one day becoming a Hallmark film.

Prophetic Forecast: Insights for Navigating the Future to Align with Heaven's Agenda by Joshua Giles Book Review

In Prophetic Forecast, Joshua Giles has written a brand-new book about prophecy and how we can prepare for what is to come. He opened up about how he began in prophetic ministry and how he saw visions and dreams at a young age. He begins the book by sharing how in 2015 he gave a prophetic message about how a rare virus would be coming that would change the world. He stated how doctors will be confused about if it was the flu or not. He told how God told him that it would require two tests to determine what it is. The virus will target the respiratory systems and he instructed them to pray for themselves and family members. He also went on about how the virus was man made and would come from a lab. He also shared how in 2019, he was told by God that a great change was coming again and it would affect every system starting with the financial and it start a collapse. It will open the doors to a great revival and a global reset. He devoted a whole chapter to the changes coming to the monetary systems. We aren’t far from digital currency and we will see the value of a dollar disappear around the world completely. He encouraged believers to not chase after the love of money but instead to seek the Lord. He explained how in scripture, Proverbs 13:22 it discussed how “the wealth of the wicked is reserved for the righteous.” He strongly believed that there is going to be a transfer of wealth to God’s people and He will be there to provide for us.

I would recommend this life changing book on prophecy to everyone who is ready to prepare for the end times. One of my favorite discussions was about Joseph and how he dealt with the famine. There is going to be a repeat coming. I liked how open Joshua Giles was in explaining the famine that is to come that will affect food supplies, pharmaceutical companies, housing market, natural disasters, spiritual, and much more. This book was very eye opening and I enjoyed reading about how he has predicted some of the changes that come to be from visions he received from God. I also liked how shinny the book design was and how they engrossed it to make it more appealing.

Crazy Joy: Finding Wild Happiness in a World That's Upside Down by Mary Katherine Backstrom Book Review

In Crazy Joy, Mary Katherine Backstrom revealed the true meaning of happiness and how fleeting it is and how instead we can choose to follow joy. She explained in her book how she suffers from OCD, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar 2. She compared it to Pokémon cards and how you never know which one will you get. She went into detail about how one day she took on a politician over Twitter and he claimed to be a Christian. She tweeted to him how in 18 months she was running for office and going to take over his seat. It went viral and caused herself some backlash. Her business colleague called her in asking her about what direction her career was going to go. They were a faith-based publisher and they didn’t know she was going to go political. She also didn’t tell her husband and he wasn’t happy when he found out what she tweeted. A lot of stories in the book, she described it as a conversation with her therapist to relay the message. She explained how she was on a quest for happiness and the next toy that promises to provide with happiness. In the book, she wants to help readers to break through the cycle and to achieve crazy true joy.

I would recommend this awesome book about happiness and discovering joy and contentment in our daily lives. I immensely loved her humor and how open she was in explaining that some days is feels like the different characters in Christopher Robin popular stories from Winnie the Pooh. I liked the story about Publix and the pecan pies and the trouble she went to at first to hid that she purchased one from there instead of making her own. I also enjoyed her sharing the story about D.A.R.E. and Scruff McGruff and how he discussed with kids in the 90’s about drugs, guns, and protecting yourself from strangers. She even described how she told on her father for drinking alcohol and mixed humor into the story. I also liked how she enclosed tour guide takeaways at the end of each chapter.
